Jujutsu Kaisen Expands Domain with “Culling Game” Arc Adaptation
Jujutsu Kaisen has announced the adaptation of the “Culling Game” arc.
Let the games begin: Jujutsu Kaisen‘s “Culling Game” arc has announced its entrance.
Popular anime series Jujutsu Kaisen recently wrapped up Season 2, where it adapted the “Kaigyoku/Gyokusetsu” arc and “Shibuya Incident” arc, on Dec. 28, 2023. Fans didn’t have to wait long for the announcement of the next season as the anime revealed it would adapt the “Culling Game” arc with Studio MAPPA remaining at the helm.
Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Season 2 premiered on July 6 in a two-hour format, adapting the “Kaigyoku/Gyokusetsu” arc, translated to “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death” arc. Tatsuya Kitani performed the opening theme song “Ao no Sumika” with Soushi Sakiyama performing the ending theme song “Light.” The arc, detailing Gojo and Geto’s friendship when they were still students at Jujutsu High as well as the fall-out, aired for five episodes, concluding on Aug. 3. Jujutsu Kaisen took a break by airing a Season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 recap on Aug. 10 and a Season 2 recap on Aug. 17.
The next arc, titled the “Shibuya Incident” arc, zeroed in on one day, Oct. 31, 2018. This arc focused on Mahito and Geto’s goal on sealing Gojo Satoru, definitively the strongest sorcerer in the world. King Gnu performed the opening theme song “Specialz” with Hitsujibungaku performing the ending theme song “More Than Words.” The arc spanned 18 episodes.
Animated and produced by Studio MAPPA, Jujutsu Kaisen aired the first season in October 2020 with 24 episodes. Sunghoo Park directed the first season as well as the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Shōta Goshozono replaced Park for Season 2’s director. Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu designed the characters and Yoshimasa Terui composed the music.
Written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen launched in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018 and currently has 23 tankōbon volumes as of July 2023. The manga has recorded over 80 million copies in circulation, earning its place as one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Akutami has recently hinted the possibility of the manga ending sometime in 2024.
The story follows an ordinary, but unusually physically fit, high school student named Yuji Itadori who gets embroiled in the world of jujutsu sorcerers when he swallows a rotten finger of Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses. Although the jujutsu sorcerers society call for his execution, Satoru Gojo, one of the teachers at Jujutsu High and the most powerful sorcerer in history, stays his execution only until Yuji can find and swallow the rest of Sukuna’s fingers, thus allowing the world to get rid of Sukuna once and for all.
Jujutsu Kaisen‘s first two seasons are available to watch on Crunchyroll. Fans can read the manga (and suffer) on Viz Media.
