Let’s be honest: manga titles can be a little… dramatic. They promise epic adventures, sweeping romances, and world-altering conflicts. And sure, the stories deliver. But what if the titles told the truth? The messy, awkward, painfully relatable truth?
We took four beloved series and gave them the honest titles they secretly deserve. (Disclaimer: We love these stories. This is all in good fun. Please don’t hurt us.)

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
Honest Title: “The Female Lead Has Low Self-Esteem, So She Fell in Love With the First Boy to Give Her Attention”
Look, we love Yashiro Nene. But let’s call it like it is. The girl is desperate enough to summon a ghost just to help her land a boyfriend. She’s got the “perfect” best friend who everyone adores, she’s been mocked for her “daikon” legs, and her love life is basically a barren wasteland. So when a supernatural boy finally gives her some positive attention—never mind that he’s dead and haunts a school bathroom—she latches on. Hard.
Is their romance endgame? Almost certainly. Does Nene genuinely care about Hanako? Absolutely. But let’s not pretend her self-esteem didn’t do most of the heavy lifting here.

Chainsaw Man
Honest Title: “Horny Teenager Does Everything to Get Laid (and Doesn’t)”
Denji. Oh, Denji. You poor, touch-starved disaster.
The boy signed away his organs, transformed into a chainsaw demon, and fought literal nightmares all for one thing: a boobie touch. And somehow, chapters and chapters later, life has cruelly, repeatedly denied him the simple pleasure of biblical union with another human being.
Yes, his character has grown in recent arcs. Yes, there’s depth here. But at his core, Denji remains the internet’s favorite reminder that the universe has a sick sense of humor.

Fushigi Yuugi
Honest Title: “If a Man Wanted to, He Would”
The retro classic that still lives rent-free in our heads. Miaka gets isekai’d into a book, finds herself surrounded by a reverse harem of beautiful men, and what does she do? Stays completely loyal to Tamahome.
Not only that—Tamahome follows her out of the book and into the real world just to be with her. He crosses dimensional boundaries for love. He learns to exist in a world without magic. He commits.
If a man wanted to, he would. Tamahome wanted to. The evidence is right there.
High Elf With a Long Life
Honest Title: “Having the Perfect Life Is Boring”
Our recent review covered this one, but it bears repeating. Acer is a high elf with flowing locks, spirit communication powers, and a peaceful existence that most would envy. And he’s bored out of his mind.
The series follows him leaving his idyllic life behind for adventure, and it’s a quiet reminder that perfection isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes you need a little chaos. Sometimes you need to remember that boring is boring, even with luscious hair.
The Truth Hurts (But It’s Also Funny)
Look, we love these series. We’ve cried over them, recommended them to friends, and written thousands of words defending their merits. But part of loving something is being able to laugh at it.
So here’s to honest titles, messy characters, and the stories that make us grateful no one’s renaming our own lives. (Although “Person With Questionable Decisions Refuses to Go to Bed at a Reasonable Hour” has a certain ring to it.)
