June 1 is Children’s Day and what better way than to celebrate it with Heaven Official’s Blessing Xie Lian and little Hong Hong-er?

In the illustration, a young dianxia stands before an injured and bandaged Hua Cheng who, at the time, was known as Hong Hong-er. With a gentle smile and kind mien, Xie Lian extends his hand to the younger boy; a gesture that shocks him. Clutching his shirt, Hong Hong-er hesitates to take Xie Lian’s hand. The two appear to be outside near the royal palace with tiny versions of themselves and other characters like Mu Qing, Qi Rong and Shi Qingxuan scattered about.

Although it appears as though Xie Lian and Hua Cheng met during the ghost bride case in Heaven Official’s Blessing, or Tian Guan Ci Fu, the two have a long history together. When Xie Lian, beloved crown prince of Xian Le, led the parade and festival, he spotted a child falling off the palace walls and, without even stopping to think, he stopped mid-performance, leapt off and caught the boy before he fell. The two didn’t know it yet, but from then on, their fates were forever intertwined.

Written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, Tian Guan Ci Fu follows Xie Lian, a thrice-ascended disgraced god who is known as the laughing stock of the three realms. Although ridiculed, Xie Lian doesn’t mind and prefers to spend his time wandering, collecting scraps and helping whenever he can. During one investigation into the disappearance of brides, he meets a mysterious man dressed all in red: Hua Cheng, the feared Crimson Rain Sought Flower. The novel received a donghua adaptation in October 2020 and has been officially licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Heaven Official’s Blessing is available to stream on Netflix with 12 episodes. Season 2 has been announced.
