Vampire Hunter D

Fans of classic anime and gothic horror are in for a treat: the cult favorite film Vampire Hunter D will premiere simultaneously on AMC Networks’ HIDIVE and Shudder streaming platforms this Friday, May 30. The streaming debut follows the movie’s successful 40th anniversary theatrical re-release, which screened in over 600 theaters across the U.S. and Canada in April.

Originally released in 1985, Vampire Hunter D is based on the best-selling novel series by Hideyuki Kikuchi and directed by Toyoo Ashida. The film is widely recognized as a landmark work of anime and a foundational title in horror animation. Blending samurai action with gothic themes, Vampire Hunter D helped define a generation of anime storytelling and gained a passionate global following.

Both platforms will stream the digitally remastered 2015 version of the original OVA, produced by Sentai Filmworks. The film will be available on demand in Japanese with English subtitles and in English dub, beginning Friday, May 30 at 7:00 GMT. The release will be accessible in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Official Synopsis:

In the year 12,090 A.D., technology and the supernatural have overtaken the world, leaving the land desolate and despotic. Humanity survives in small, scattered communities under the shadow of vampire overlords known as the Nobility. When Count Magnus Lee marks Doris Lang as his future bride, she turns to a mysterious vampire hunter known only as D to save her. But D’s own origins may hold secrets as dark as the ones he’s sworn to destroy.
