Chainsaw Man Manga Goes on One-Week Break After Exciting Cliffhanger

The showdown between Denji and smoochey girl will have to wait until August when Chainsaw Man returns.

Chainsaw Man released Chapter 137 “Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura” on July 25, featuring Denji going on an unexpected movie date with a girl Yoshida set Denji up in the last chapter. The date quickly devolves into a gore-fest when it turns out the girl has no intention of having a nice ‘normal’ date with Denji. Chainsaw Man will take a break on Aug. 1 and come back with Chapter 138 on Aug. 8.

Created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man initially began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump for its first arc. After taking a hiatus that lasted for almost two years, Chainsaw Man began its second arc in Shōnen Jump+. The manga has amassed over 24 million copies in circulation as of May 2023, making it one of the best-selling manga series. Chainsaw Man has won numerous accolades including the Harvey Awards in Best Manga for two consecutive years.

Chainsaw Man received an anime adaptation by Studio MAPPA in October 2022 with Ryū Nakayama as the director. The anime boasted a staggering 12 different ending songs for each episode. Despite the high anticipation leading up to the anime, the anime adaptation has garnered mixed reactions from fans. MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka said, “To be honest, I wish I could have reached more audiences who pay for the package,” he said, noting the low Blu-Ray/DVD sales for the anime adaptation. “We will explore how to approach the target audience who will pay money for the work of CSM.“

The story follows an impoverished young man named Denji who gains the ability to turn into a Devil called Chainsaw Man after his best friend Pochita sacrifices himself to save him. In his desire to pursue a better life, Denji joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters and teams up with stoic Devil Hunter Aki Hayakawa and fanatic Blood Devil Power to hunt down the Gun Devil. The second arc of the manga focuses on Asa Mitaka who enters a contract with the War Devil, Yoru.

Chainsaw Man is available to read on Viz Media and the Shonen Jump app. Chapter 138 releases on Aug. 8.
