A Sign of Affection Announces Anime Adaptation for January 2024

A Sign of Affection, the sweet manga about a girl with a hearing impairment and a boy who has seen the world, will make its anime debut.

January 2024 is going to be extra sweet with the release of A Sign of Affection.

Yubisaki to Renren, or A Sign of Affection in English, a romance manga starring a deaf protagonist, will make its anime debut in January 2024. To celebrate the announcement, a new PV has been released. The PV features Yuki Itose’s first meeting with Itsuomi Nagi on the train when he helps her out. Yuki is surprised when Itsuomi pats her head and tells her that he’ll see her later despite how different the two’s communication styles are.

Ajia-do (Revenger and Kimono Jihen) will animate and produce the anime with Yūta Murano directing. Murano storyboarded episodes for Kemono Jihen and Kamisama Kiss 2. Yoko Yonaiyama (Ya Boy Kongming! and Skip and Loafer) will serve as the series scriptwriter while Kasumi Sakai (Gintama and Mobile Suit Gundam 00) will serve as the character designer. Yukari Hashimoto (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun and Komi Can’t Communicate) will compose.

Created by suu Morishita, A Sign of Affection began serialization in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine in July 2019. The duo conceptualized the idea for the manga as they both wanted to make sign language as the focal point of the story. The two did extensive research, from reading to interviewing teachers at a school for the deaf and having Yuki Miyazaki supervise their use of sign language for the manga. Miyazaki also shared details of “her world as a Deaf person and [told the duo] about her daily life.”

College student Yuki’s world is silent. When she meets a well-travelled Itsuomi on a chance encounter when they’re both on the train, the two’s worlds begin expanding. Sumire Morohoshi (Bungo Stray Dogs and Haikyuu!!) will portray Yuki Itose. Yū Miyazaki (Haikyuu!! and 100 Sleeping Princes and the Kingdom of Dreams) as Itsuomi Nagi.

A Sign of Affection will launch sometime in January 2024.
