Volume 1 of Under the Oak Tree is a captivating blend of romance, emotional growth and rich storytelling. The story follows Maximilian, a shy noblewoman with a stutter, as she navigates an arranged marriage to Riftan, a rugged knight who becomes their kingdom’s hero. What sets this novel apart is its delicate exploration of Maxi’s insecurities and the slow yet rewarding development of her confidence within her marriage and herself.

Author Suji Kim crafts a deeply emotional narrative with vivid world-building and a compelling cast of characters. Riftan’s steadfast devotion is touching, but I personally felt he needed to learn to have a bit more patience with Maxi. Their struggles with communication often lead to misunderstandings that could easily have been resolved with open dialogue. This dynamic, while frustrating at times, adds depth to their relationship as both characters grapple with their own insecurities and emotional barriers.

The novel’s mix of tender moments and tension keeps readers hooked, while its themes of healing and self-acceptance resonate long after the final page. Under the Oak Tree is a must-read for fans of character-driven fantasy romance, offering an emotional journey that promises even greater growth and connection in future volumes.
