Despite the box office success Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle, fans were anxious for how the remaining chapters of the volleyball manga would be adapted.

Haikyuu!! announced it would conclude with a two-part film series with the first part, The Dumpster Battle, depicting the fateful and long-awaited match between Karasuno and Nekoma. However, fans who have read the manga were worried that, with more than 100 chapters left, arcs would have to be cut out — the question was, which ones?

Luckily, during the Production I.G panel at Anime Expo, someone asked if the time skip would be animated and the answer was “yes.” The translator said that everything would be animated.

Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump was directed by Susumu Mitsunaka, notably the director who helmed the first three seasons of the anime franchise. Mitsunaka also wrote the script with Production I.G animating and producing. Other staff members include Takahiro Kishida as the character designer. Takahiro Chiba returned as the chief animation director with Mariko Ishikawa as the assistant director. Mayumi Sato oversaw the colour design while Ichiro Tatsuta was the art director.

Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump premiered in Japan on Feb. 16 and earned 890 million yen on its first day, marking it as the fourth highest-grossing opening day in Japan’s history, behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba–The Movie: Mugen Train, One Piece Film: Red, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The film continued its enormous success by earning 2.13 billion yen in its opening weekend, making it the sixth movie to make over 2 billion yen in Japanese box office history. The film was renamed to The Dumpster Battle for its international premiere and the film opened in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on May 31.

Haikyuu!! began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump on Feb. 20, 2012 and ran until July 20, 2020. The series contains 45 tankōbon volumes with 402 chapters. The manga has garnered positive acclaim for its humour, character development and storytelling.

All four seasons of Haikyuu!! are available to stream on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
