Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back Gets Anime Film

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed one-shot Look Back will be adapted into an anime film.

Mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto is most well-known for Chainsaw Man but his one-shots have stolen readers’ hearts with his simple yet detailed illustrations and poignant storytelling. One such one-shot is Look Back which was published in Shōnen Jump+ in June 2021. The one-shot will be produced as an anime film by Studio Durian and will premiere in Japan on June 28. Studio Durian is credited for animation assistance on The Boy and the Heron and Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s New Dinosaur. Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers) will direct. A teaser trailer and visual have been released, focusing on Ayumu Fujino drawing at her desk.

Look Back follows a young girl named Ayumu Fujino whose confidence in her manga-drawing skills get shattered when a fellow classmate named Kyomoto proves her art skills surpasses Fujino’s. Although Fujino makes every attempt to get better than Kyomoto, it proves fruitless. When Fujino is tasked with delivering her school diploma to Kyomoto’s house, she’s startled to find Kyomoto idolizes her and has been following Fujino’s manga in the school paper for a long time. The two quickly become friends and work together to write and publish manga. As they grow older, they start growing apart and eventually go on separate paths. However, Fujino quits drawing when tragedy strikes.

Look Back garnered 2.5 million reads on the first day it was released and the tankōbon volume sold over 70,000 copies in its first week of release. The one-shot has gained praised for its storytelling and art style.

Look Back premieres on June 28. The one-shot is available to read on Viz Media.
