Mononoke Reveals New VA Replacing Takahiro Sakurai
The delayed Mononoke anime reveals Hiroshi Kamiya as the voice actor replacing scandal-embroiled Takahiro Sakurai, as well as the film’s premiere window.
Mononoke, which was delayed earlier this year due to voice actor Takahiro Sakurai’s scandal, has announced its new release window and revealed Sakurai’s replacement.
Veteran voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya, best known for roles such as Attack on Titan‘s Levi and Haikyuu!!‘s Ittetsu Takeda, will take on the part of the protagonist, the Medicine Seller, in Mononoke. Kamiya is an award-winning voice actor, having previously won Best Supporting Actor at the 2nd Annual Seiyuu Awards in 2008 and Best Lead Actor and Best Personality in 2009. His most recent victory occurred in 2016 when he took home the award for Most Votes for the 5th consecutive time and entered the Hall of Fame.
At the time of the delay, Twin Engine, the production studio behind the anime, shared its decision to push back the release date and recast the voice of the Medicine Seller, initially portrayed by Takahiro Sakurai. Sakurai was embroiled in a scandal that revealed he had cheated on his wife for over 10 years with a staff member. Twin Engine’s statement read: “…the animated film “MONONOKE” sets in Ōoku (historically the women’s quarters of Edo Castle) and tries to depict the suffering and remedy of women. Judging from the standpoint of the story, we decided to change the cast of the Medicine Seller.”
Mononoke will release in the summer of 2024.
