That chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen was devastating enough that it forced Fly Me to the Moon’s mangaka to take a hiatus.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Gege Akutami may have catapulted Tonikawa‘s Kenjiro Hata to the moon with its most traumatic chapter to date.

As reported by Anime News Network, Fly Me to the Moon‘s mangaka Kenjiro Hata will be going on a hiatus and return in the Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine’s 50th issue. The reason? He needed a break after Jujutsu Kaisen‘s chapter destroyed him emotionally, much like it did the fandom. Fans have noted that Hata is a fan of Jujutsu Kaisen as the mangaka has snuck in references to the manga several times in his own work, such as a Gojo Satoru cameo and mentions of “Domain Expansion.”

In a certain chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, readers were utterly shocked and heartbroken to see one beloved character meet their grisly end. Shrines were erected where fans tearfully paid tribute to the character. It also didn’t help that, during that same week of that chapter’s release, the same character was put out of commission in the anime.

Hata wrote and illustrated Fly Me to the Moon where it launched in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in February 2018 and contains 25 tankōbon volumes as of September 2023. The story follows Nasa Yuzaki who, after attempting to approach a beautiful girl, is hit by a truck. The girl, Tsukasa Tsukuyomi, saves him and when he wakes up, he confesses to her. However, she accepts his love on the condition that they get married first.

Fly Me to the Moon inspired an anime adaptation which launched the first season in October 2020, courtesy of Seven Arcs. A second season aired from April to June 2023. A four-episode original net animation (ONA), titled Tonikawa: Over the Moon For You: High School Days released from July to August 2023.

Fans (and Hata) are still recovering from Jujutsu Kaisen but the manga can be read on Viz Media.
