Digimon Celebrates Monumental 25th Anniversary in Touching PV
Digimon has released a special PV in honor of its 25th anniversary, featuring the opening theme songs of the first four series.
It wouldn’t be remiss to say that Digmon has made as much of an impact on many people’s childhoods as Pokémon.
Toei Animation released a special 25th anniversary PV to celebrate Digimon. The PV was first revealed during Digimon Con 2024 and features the opening theme songs of the first four Digimon anime series. The iconic opening theme song from the first series, “Butter-Fly” by Kōji Wada opens the video before transitioning to “Target ~Akai Shōgeki~,” also performed by Wada which can be heard in Digimon Adventure 02. Wada’s next song “The Biggest Dreamer” was the opening theme song of Digimon Tamers and the video closed with Wada’s “Fire!!” which opened Digimon Frontier.
Digmon Adventure aired on March 7, 1999 for 54 episodes and followed a group of friends who landed in the digital world after receiving Digivices during summer camp. Digimon Adventure went on to release a six-part film series for its 15th anniversary called Digimon Adventure tri. and follows the original Digi-Destined, but now in high school. It went on to release its last film called Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna which follows the Digi-Destined in university and are now young adults trying to navigate the world on their own. The series received a reboot in 2020 and aired for 67 episodes.
A direct sequel called Digimon Adventure 02 released on April 2, 2000 with 50 episodes and follows a new cast of characters with characters from Digimon Adventure making their appearance. The sequel follows the Digi-Destined trying to fight the Digimon Emperor as the latter tries to control the Digimon using rings. Similarly to Digimon Adventure, 02 also received a film called Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning which premiered in Japan on Oct. 27, 2023.
Digimon Tamers aired on April 1, 2001 and features an entirely new style of Digimon whereby the characters use cards from a collectible card game to bring out their Digimon. Tamers aired for 51 episodes. While there were originally plans to create a sequel in 2021, it was ultimately rejected due to casting issues.
Following Digimon Tamers was Digimon Frontier which aired a year later on April 7, 2002. Like Tamers, Digimon Frontier featured a whole new concept where the Digi-Destined now have the ability to merge with ancient spirits to become Digimon themselves. The series aired for 50 episodes. A squel film called Digimon Frontier: Island of Lost Digimon premiered on July 20, 2002.
It would be four more years before fans would see another Digimon animated series. On April 2, 2006, Digimon Data Squad premiered with 48 episodes and follows a government organization called Digital Accident Tacts Squad who works to maintain peace between the Real World and Digital World. A film called Digimon Savers: Ultimate Power! Burst Mode Activated!! released in Japan on Dec. 9, 2006.
Another four years passed before Digimon Fusion aired on July 6, 2010. Digimon Fusion aired on July 6, 2010 and was divided into three arcs. The series follows Mikey Kudo who has the ability to fuse Digimon.
Digimon Universe: App Monsters takes place in the far future in the year 2045 where AI beings are born within mobile apps and an evil entity is working to corrupt these Digimon. The series aired on Oct. 1, 2016 with 52 episodes.
Digimon Ghost Game aired on Oct. 3, 2021 with 67 episodes and one special episode. The series takes a decidedly different tone by combining the supernatural and horror with adventure. The series follows a middle schooler named Hiro Amanokawa who is able to see Digimon that no one else can see.
