The director of the first season of Chainsaw Man has announced his new studio.

Ryu Nakayama, the director behind Season 1 of Chainsaw Man, Rising of the Shield Hero, and the key animator for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, has launched his new animation studio called Andraft by way of dropping a new PV. Andraft was founded on the basis of taking on “various challenges without being bound by existing concepts and maintain that impetus for as long as possible,” and, in its inaugural tweet, promised to establish a “better animation production system and deliver high-quality works to the world.”

The PV, a collaboration promo for VSPO and Cardfight!! Vanguard, features a number of intriguing animation styles at an impressive quality. Andraft spared no time in showcasing its ingenuity in its action sequences.

Nakayama’s move to establishing his own studio seemingly marks his departure from Studio MAPPA. The director had seemed to allude to his new studio when he tweeted in November, “Our mission this year is to build a better working environment that is free from power harassment and moral harassment, free from unnecessary stress, and stable in terms of money and time. Although it is still a small scale, we are slowly taking shape. It’s only the first year, so we’ll be steadily building our foundation, and we should be able to release it soon.”

The director first began working with Studio MAPPA when he came onboard to direct the first season of Chainsaw Man. As one of the most highly-anticipated anime adaptations, Nakayama’s more cinematic approach divided fans with some appreciating the different approach while others believed his direction was not faithful to the manga style. The criticism rose to the level of a petition started by fans, calling for a change in director.

Nakayama has not broached what kind of projects Andraft will take on, but anticipation is high for the studio.
