The story is not over yet: Alice in Borderland is returning for Season 3.

After the cliffhanger ending of Season 2 when the Alice in Borderland series closed with a close-up of the Joker card, fans wondered if this would be the end. Netflix Japan has confirmed Season 3 is in development through an ominous teaser video, accompanied by creepy music, of the Joker card. There is no word yet of the release date. “Everyone thought this was the end, but there was one piece left,” the director wrote. “A new journey that no one knows about begins. More games. More Player. Who is the enemy? Who will survive? An unknown journey where no one knows the answer.”

Previously, fans have noticed a mysterious advertisement posted around Japan where cards were laid out, against a faint background of the Joker’s face. Fans quickly deciphered the secret message and realized it spelled out “ALICE THREE.”

Alice in Borderland, originally a manga series written and illustrated by Haro Aso (the writer of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, ran in Shōnen Sunday S from November 2010 to March 2015 before moving to Weekly Shōnen Sunday in April 2015 where it ran until March 2016. The story follows Ryohei Arisu who spends most of his time gaming and hanging out with his friends. One day, Arisu, Karube and Chōta all spot a shower of fireworks. The next thing they know, they’ve been transported into an alternate version of Tokyo called the Borderlands and they must now participate in a series of death games to accumulate enough days to stay alive.

Netflix renewed the second season two weeks after the first season ended due to popularity. Season 2 aired in December 2022 with eight episodes. According to Model Japan, Yamazaki and Tsuchiya will return in their respective roles and Season 3 will focus on the two, who have lost the meaning of life, risk their lives to return to the original world.

Season 2 ended where the manga series ended, although Aso wrote a spin-off called Alice on Border Road and sequel series called Alice in Borderland: Retry, the latter of which follows Arisu as he returns back to the Borderlands.

Alice in Borderland is available to watch on Netflix. The manga is available to read on Viz Media.
